My art uses images and words to tell stories, integrating painting with markings, textures, words, and often original photography. While the images and words are clearly important, it is the textures and markings that translate the journey, moving between the visual elements and occasionally becoming the dominant feature. My current series focuses on how we create or build our life, using the symbols and words of architecture to tell the stories. For this series I am using a wooden cradle instead of canvas and joint compound instead of gesso. What has not changed is the multi-layered process. The process is a mathematical problem of addition and subtraction where I create a surface, add glazes and images, then perhaps sand away a portion of that image only to begin again drawing lines, adding glazes. This process moves back and forth between layers, one obscuring or partially obscuring another, chipping away, adding to, until the surface tells the story.
