John MARA was born 1972 in Bucharest Romania, but lives in Sweden since 1980. Inspired by his father Constantin Mara, also a painter, he began classic art studies at the "Art School of Stockholm" at the age of 15. At 18 he was accepted at the "University College of Arts, Crafts and Design" of Stockholm (Konstfack) as one of the youngest students ever. This was followed by studies in London at "The School of Communication Arts".

"My paintings can be described as abstract self portraits where the signature plays a central part. I used to hate my signature, thinking that it destroyed the illusion of the image I was painting. But one day when I was displeased with a painting - in anger - I made a large signature across the whole canvas. Surprised over the result, I decided to explore this path. This led to a style of painting that feels like a part of me." John Mara
