My background is in the theatre-I am intrigued by characters –how and why people do the things they do. Like an actress portraying different characters, I instinctively search for the unique emotional life of the characters I paint. An acting coach of mine once taught me an exercise where I’d choose a painting, then create a scene where I, as the character, would end up in the exact position, and emotional state as the character in the painting. That improvisation left me forever intrigued with portraits.
I work like a sculptor does, carving the largest masses first and work my way down to the smaller details last. I like to capture the emotional essence of a subject through form and color. I combine warm, vivid colors in a particular way, to capture a distinct atmosphere. I plan every piece to a certain point and then allow my intuition to take over my medium.
I have been painting since childhood. My journeys through life took me to Los Angeles where I acted for many years....
