The „timeguards“ of the Austrian artist Manfred Kielnhofer are the top of a some years lasting development. Dealing with room-concepts, sculptures and installations on one hand and the being engaged with mystic experiences and religion on the other hand lead the artist to these strange characters. 2006 the first of these figures was created. It reminds us of a walking monk, who seems to be lost in something. Kielnhofer puts his timeguard in public places like ancient castlers, old mines, main squares or in parks. The grim seeker after truth
Anyone wondering why these grim reaper style figures were seated on this white van - look no further than the latest installation from artist Manfred Kielnhofer. He is from Haslach an der Mühl, in the district of Rohrbach in Upper Austria, Austria, and is an artist and designer whose work usually centres around the human anatomy. His recent piece of art is the Ghost Car, which is a product of the developing ‘Light Guards’ project. This project surfaced from the theory that humankind has always been able to boast having guardians in different ways, in potential danger from only themselves. This idea intrigued the artist Kielnhofer, who approached it with his artwork, intertwining the theme of longing for security harboured by all humans. The Ghost Car portrays a sizely white van driving, seating sheet-covered figures. Perhaps this reflects individuality, exploration and recognition of current events in society, as it seems to interpret the theme by suggesting the hooded figures are looking to the drapes and car for protection as they are possibly ghosts, who are afraid of the life after death, and long for safekeeping.

Guards of Time Manfred Kielnhofer
“Guards of Time” relates to the idea that since the beginning of time mankind has had protectors, both for historic and mystical reasons. It seems that only man himself is a potential source of danger for his own existence. In his works of art Manfred Kielnhofer deals with the natural human desire for security. Thus his oeuvre reflects genuine exploration, consideration and discussion of current as well as historic moods and sensibilities of his social environment. His works of art captivate with elaborate combinations of light and different technique.
Manfred Kielnhofer was born in Haslach an der Mühl, Austria. He is self-taught and works with many different mediums; including, painting, film, photography, installation, performance and sculpture. His work usually concerns the human figure, and its different forms and movements, focusing mainly on the peculiarities of human nature. He uses the human form as a tool, either on a canvas or in a sculpture.

Manfred Kielnhofer’s The Guardians of Time Installation Is Currently Occupying Documenta In Kassel
Manfred Kielnhofer‘s ‘The Guardians of Time’ are an illegal installation currently on show at Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany. The sculpture was installed on Friedrichsplatz in the ‘Occupy Kassel’ camp after curators rejected the artists wish to have it included in the exhibition – which includes over 300 exhibitions by artists from all over the World. The Guardians will be on site until the end of the art festival which concludes on 16th September 2012 and will spend their time travelling around the vast Documenta area, popping up at the numerous venues spread across the city.
Here’s what the artist had to say about the work:
In the past, the the Guardians of Time, took care of the people, now I think there are already too many people. He would prefer to take care of the world that is destroyed more frequently by men.
“Time is money”‘s what they say,
Those lost in space of time.
Post space comes time, no other way,
Time pressure contra rhyme.
The bigger the better and not quick enough,
That’s what they wanna save.
But rich is who’s got peace and love
And not who’s stressed ’til grave.
To have is always good to be,
And earning sometimes more.
But who’s got what by whom? You see?
Nature was long before.
Use what is your gift given
By universe and try
To help shift paradigm
Just do and don’t be shy!
It’s tough to stay that extrovert,
When counter-waves arrive.
But try not see them as pervert,
Just unasked answer’s drive.
Don’t steal! Forgive and share the goal
Together with your friend.
Your enemies can live it on.
The lie will fall. The End.
