I handbuild stamped clay pieces in the same way a quilter sews cloths together, creating patterns, seams and a united whole. I try to patch together individual pieces of stamped and cut clay so that when the glaze is applied and fired the end result is a rich patterned surface with the deeper colors coating the recesses and a smooth more uniform color framing them. I am drawn to works full of texture, whether from Pre-Columbian Maya, Joman Period Japanese, or from my favorite clay artist, Lana Wilson. If I find an object that has a relief pattern, such as, the soles of shoes, small toy pieces, or woven fabrics, I collect them, get them muddy by pressing them in wet clay, and discover a new pattern to add to my arsenal. I accidentally came upon my idea of “quilted plates” by laying pieces of raised-pattern wallpaper face down on the wet slabs and pushing a roller over them. The process has developed over the past couple of years and has turned into what I have branded “quilted plates”. ...
