Paducah , Kentucky - United States
- Other/Misc.

"Butterfly" aptly describes me as an artist, because I seem to flutter about from one project to another all throughout the day, the week, the month, the year; in fact, my entire life.
Currently, I am working on a mixed-medium sculpture for a church in Eastern Kentucky, several paintings, some fiber pieces (art-to-wear), and some drawings.
Last year, as Master Muralist, I supervised the completion of six historical murals in the downtown area of Metropolis, Illinois, and completed the longest, continuous Riverscape Mural in the world (working with three other artists) for Ingram Barge Company across the Ohio River, here in Paducah.
I have painted murals all over the USA and artworks in collections all over the globe. As soon as I settled here in Kentucky (I moved from Hawaii), I was awarded six grants from the Kentucky Arts Council. It is a major blessing to have been able to use the gifts God has given me in so many different ways. I believe that "Art is Prayer."

"Born To Paint"
2008-07-01
When they first see her hands, other people think that Lady Van Tiger's abilities to paint and sculpt are quite miraculous. She has birth defects in both hands which doctors have told her were probably from a trace of thalodomide, a drug given to help pregnant women with morning sickness back in the late 50's- early 60's when Lady's mom got sample drugs from her doctor before Lady was born.

During a childhood filled with hospital stays and surgeries--thirteen in all (her feet were affected as well), Lady learned to draw and paint, developing a very active imagination and abilities which surprised doctors.
Lady thinks the birth defects aren't defects at all. "See, I have my index finger and my thumb and half of the long finger in the middle--just right for holding a brush, a pen, or a sculpting tool," she says, showing off her right hand. "Everybody else has fingers that get in the way."

With hundreds of murals painted across the USA, and sales of artwork to private collectors across the globe, this is one "Thalodomide Baby" who has triumphed as a "Super" artist with the honor of officiating as Master Muralist for the recent historical murals commissioned by the city of Metropolis, Illinois who claims "Superman" as their own, with a huge Superman statue in the town square. The town has now embraced a legacy as part of this artist's life: Lady Van Tiger, the little girl who was "born to paint."

She says, "I think God uses my hands to teach other people to let go of their own 'perceived limitations.' So many people see what I do and then, finally, give themselves permission to accomplish things--dreams that they have always held in their hearts, but didn't believe they could pull off."

Aloha, and Mahalo for your compliment. I absolutely adore flowers! I think they are magical creations and paint and sculpt them quit a bit, like you. I checked out your site. Your flowers seem to glow!
