Oil Painting - Other/Misc.

Growing up in Albania I was taught to paint in the only style allowed: Socialist Realism. I enjoyed painting but felt something was missing. Students were allowed to paint only bright colors or pictures of happy subjects. Art was considered representative of society: to paint otherwise might communicate unhappiness with the system.

Upon moving to Greece, I was free to choose how and what to paint. I painted the simple things to which we give little attention: an old door, the hard laborer, etc. I love the honest simplicity of these subjects. But it is the “third age” (Albanian term for the elderly) that inspires me most. I appreciate the stories, hard times, and knowledge I see in their faces, posture, presence.

My style remains classic but now I enjoy using a wide range of colors. I use paintbrushes but prefer spatulas to apply the layers and texture that bring intensity to my work. Yet, no matter the technique or subject, I paint with great emotion and without restrictions.
