Sculpture- Nature

The starting point for Daniel's work is observational drawing. His practice deals with his continuing interest in natural history museums, it's presentation of animal as object, both a representation of the animal and the animal itself. When drawing these it highlights the contradiction of the naturalistic poses and their unnatural surroundings.
Daniel's practice is now focused on creating models from the original drawings. These models are made entirely of cardboard and are a life-size representation of the original. These models are highly detailed and the time consuming nature of their production is clear in their appearance.
What Daniel is trying to achieve through his practice is to illustrate the futility of documenting the natural world within a museum. It is important that these models are highly detailed. Apart from representing it's subject the model is an obsessive object.

It’s nice to see a fellow artist making use of cardboard. I started painted at 14 by converted cardboard cereal boxes into canvases because I couldn’t afford a real canvas. I think that there is a lot to be done artistically with the material and your final product is amazing. I couldn’t even tell what the bird were made of until I read the description. I love your message about animals and the environment – so true. Skilled work!
